Portraiture has been central to Mathew Lynn's practice for over three decades, encompassing private and public commissions, prize submissions, and sustained series. His works are held in the National Portrait Gallery, NSW Government House, and the Supreme Court of New South Wales. Of particular note are his preliminary trois crayons Conté drawings on brown paper — a method he brought to his series of portraits of Gundungurra elders, drawn in response to the country of the Blue Mountains escarpments.
